After a long wait, the team unveiled their new name.

After abandoning their previous moniker as the Washington Redskins several years ago on concerns of racist iconography, the Washington Football Team has been quietly workshopping and focus testing new names and brandings. After a very long selection process, this week, the team finally came to a consensus and announced the new name. Starting this week, the official NFL football team for Washington state is the Washington Commanders.

“As an organization, we are excited to rally and rise together as one under our new identity while paying homage to our local roots and what it means to represent the nation’s capital,” team owner Dan Snyder said in a statement. “As we kick off our 90th season, it is important for our organization and fans to pay tribute to our past traditions, history, legacy and the greats that came before us. We continue to honor and represent the Burgundy & Gold while forging a pathway to a new era in Washington. Today may mark the first day for the Washington Commanders, but we are and always will be Washington.”

The Commanders are keeping their same burgandy and gold color scheme from the old days, but the new logo is a capital W with bold, angular lines. According to the team, this new logo is meant to symbolize “forward movement and progress.” New jerseys and team swag are already available at most retailers of sports paraphernalia. The team will begin playing in earnest when the next NFL season begins later this year.
