The team is deciding between three potential names.

After renouncing their former moniker as the Washington Redskins due to accusations of insensitivity against Native Americans, the currently-known Washington Football Team has been contemplating possible new names. After all, they can’t remain the “Washington Football Team” forever; they need a proper name for branding opportunities. This is why the team has been quietly working through a list of potential name changes, and the one they’ll ultimately settle on is drawing near.

In a recent episode of YouTube series “Making the Brand,” the team’s president, Jason Wright discussed their progress with head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew. Wright revealed eight of the names they had worked down to. While this was not the final eight, it was eight of the strongest contenders. The names in question are the Washington Presidents, Brigade, Redhogs, Football Team, Commanders, Armada, Defenders and Redwolves. Based on fan reactions, Redwolves seems to have been one of the most positively received.

“We started out with 40,000 submissions and began from there to winnow down to a smaller amount,” Wright said in the video. “It gave us a broad view of how the public and the fan base feel about us as an organization and where they want to see us go.”

Wright clarified in a Twitter post after this episode that the team has worked their way down to three potential names, though he did not divulge which names they’re deciding between. Whatever name the team ends up going with, Wright promised that it will have no reference to Native Americans, nor should it be offensive to any particular group of people. Wright hopes that the new name will assuage the insensitivity concerns and drum up more support for the team.
