The new movie has surpassed Titanic as Paramount’s flag-bearer.

You could say a lot of things about Tom Cruise, but no matter what, you can’t deny that the guy knows from quality when it comes to movies, especially if his latest picture, Top Gun: Maverick, is any indication. The new film in the long-dormant film series about high-flying fighter jets has been an absolute critical darling, scoring a 96% with critics and a 99% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, such a well-received movie has been absolutely killing it at the box office, to the point that it’s become the new standard-bearer for Paramount Pictures. As of this past weekend, Top Gun: Maverick has brought in a grand total of $662 million in box office sales. This profit has officially unseated James Cameron’s Titanic as the highest grossing film ever produced by Paramount Pictures, and has made Top Gun: Maverick the seventh highest-grossing film in movie history, right below Avengers: Infinity War.

In terms of the global box office, Titanic is still outperforming Top Gun: Maverick with a historical box office of $2.2 billion. However, Top Gun: Maverick is hot on its tail with a global box office total of $1 billion, officially making it the highest-grossing movie of 2022 so far, as well as the very first movie this year to exceed $1 billion in global sales.
