‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Renewed for Final Season

The sixth and final season was announced ahead of the fifth season premier.
September 14 will see the Hulu premier of the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale, the critically-acclaimed series based on the novel by Margaret Atwood. Ahead of that premier, Hulu and MGM divulged some news that is simultaneously exciting and disappointing for the fans. Following the fifth season, The Handmaid’s Tale will receive a sixth season. The sixth season, however, is confirmed to be the final season of the series.
“It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of,” said series creator Bruce Miller in a statement. “We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”

While the end of The Handmaid’s Tale is in sight, it may not be the end for the show’s setting. Miller is already developing a sequel series based on the book’s sequel, The Testaments, which will take place some years after the events of the sixth season.
