A recent incident has made teams more conscious of their families’ privacy.

On Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks went up against the Phoenix Suns for Game 4 of the playoffs. The Mavericks won 111-101, but that wasn’t the major concern of the game. During the game, the family of Suns point guard Chris Paul were watching from the stands, including his wife, his children, and his mother, there for Mother’s Day. The family was verbally harassed and touched without their consent multiple times throughout the game, an issue that, according to other players and staff, is becoming more frequent.

“It was unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated,” the Mavericks said in a statement. “The Mavericks, along with American Airlines Center, swiftly removed the fan from today’s game.”

“Wanna fine players for saying stuff to the fans but the fans can put they hands on our families … f— that!!” Paul wrote on Twitter.

One person with more to say was Suns coach Monty Williams, who thinks more measures need to be taken to ensure the privacy of player families.

“It’s a hard one, because it’s happening more and more,” Williams told reporters at practice on Monday. “The situations are getting to a place now where I really feel like families, who are there to support their loved ones, need to be protected a bit more. Whether or not we have to give these people a section, a suite, something has to be done.

“Because we can’t wait for it to get to a level or two higher, before we do what we need to do. Yesterday was unnecessary.”

Johnson praised arena security for handling the rowdy fans, but added that security staff can only do so much. “A large part of the responsibility has to be on fans,” Johnson said. “They just can’t act that way. There’s no other way around it. You’ve got to address the problem with the real problem. It’s that a fan can’t go up to someone’s mother and harass them.”
