Torrential rain didn’t stop these four from golfing for a good cause.

As someone who lives right next to a golf course, I always love watching people drive out for tee times, even in the strangest, poorest conditions. In the last few days it’s been pretty heavy rain nearly nonstop, yet whenever I glance out the window, I always see at least one cart whizzing by. There’s something admirable about playing sports despite inclement conditions, even if it’s something low-impact like golf. I guess that’s why golf charity events are so successful, rain or shine.

Over the weekend, a charity event was held at the Medalist Golf Club in Florida. This event, titled “The Match: Champions for Charity,” featured four superstar sports personality in a two-on-two game to raise money for COVID-19 relief. Our competitors were Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning versus Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. Unfortunately, Mother Nature must’ve just watched The Notebook, because the moment they set foot on the course, it started raining cats and dogs. Despite the torrential rain, the quartet went right on playing, prompting millions of viewers to tune in and donate. By the end of the first half-hour of the broadcast, the event had managed to raise $1.5 million for charity.

Part of the success of the event can be attributed to basketballer Charles Barkley, who was brought on as a celebrity analyst. With a bit of prodding from Barkley, the competitors engaged in some good-natured trash talking, always a crowd pleaser.

“I’ve learned something through this pandemic, we need sports, man,” Barkley told CNN last week. “Are they the most important thing in the world? Not even close. But the one thing they do, they take your mind off of all the other stuff going on in the world.”

By the end of the game, “The Match: Champions for Charity” had managed to raise an impressive $20 million in charitable donations, double the event’s goal of $10 million.
