The vampiric anti-hero is on the hunt this January.

It’s starting to get a little confusing, determining the boundaries of the Spider-Man movie canon. Spider-Man, as we currently know him, exists in the MCU, but apparently he… also exists in an entirely separate continuity, if Venom is any indication? I don’t know, it’s weird. What I do know is that Sony is going whole-hog with their use of the Spider-Man property, squeezing movie ideas out of any character they think has a shot. Case in point: Morbius, the Living Vampire.

A new trailer dropped today for the upcoming film adaptation of Morbius, with Jared Leto starring as the titular scientist. Much like in the original Spider-Man comics, Dr. Michael Morbius is afflicted with a degenerative blood disease, and engages in a… questionably ethical experiment to seek a cure. He ends up with a debatably worse condition: pseudo-vampirism, including enhanced physical abilities, flight, a radar sense, and of course, an insatiable thirst for human blood. Now Morbius needs to find a way to sate his hunger and use his powers for good, lest he turn into a complete monster.

The film, which is set for release on January 28, 2022, is being directed by Daniel Espinosa, with a screenplay penned by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless. Besides Leto as Morbius, the film will feature appearances by Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson.

Interestingly, a brief moment at the end of the trailer teases a connection to the Venom films, which implies that Sony is trying to assemble its own cinematic universe. What its proximity to the MCU will be remains to be seen, especially considering some ongoing legal snafus regarding the rights to Spider-Man.
