Sony Finally Reveals the PlayStation 5

In all its curvy, white glory.

For months now, Sony has been teasing and taunting us with the potential of the mysterious PlayStation 5. What will it look like? What will it be capable of? What will it cost? Will it be able to compete with the Xbox Series X? We were going to receive answers to (some of) those questions last week in a big presentation, though that presentation was delayed by Sony in an effort to keep the national dialogue on the ongoing protests, which is super understandable. Last night, though we finally got that presentation… although we didn’t actually get to see the physical PS5 until after an hour-plus of game trailers. But soon enough, we finally saw it: the PlayStation 5. Both of ’em.

The PS5 comes in two different editions: the standard, and the digital. The only actually difference between these two versions is that the standard edition features a Blu-ray disc drive, while the digital edition doesn’t, meaning any games you buy for it will have to be digital only. Presumably, the digital edition will cost a bit less, though one detail that was conspicuously absent from the presentation was a price point for either version. In addition to the main hardware, Sony has cooked up a suite of accessories to go along with it. Besides the DualSense controller we saw earlier in the year, there’s a double-lens HD camera, a Pulse 3D Wireless headset, and even a media remote for watching streaming apps.

The PS5 features an eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU and a custom AMD RDNA 2-based GPU, with custom AMD chips pumping out 10.28 teraflops of power. It’ll also feature an onboard SSD with 825GB of storage and 5.5GB/s of performance. If you don’t normally pay attention to console specs, then allow me to assure you that these are all real words.

No concrete release date has been set yet, but judging from the number of new game trailers that are targeting a Holiday 2020 release, Sony will probably try to get this thing out in time for Christmas. Oh, and one last thing: my friends all insist that the top of the console looks like the pogchamp guy’s face.
