Sonic 2 has become the highest performing video game-based movie in history.

In the 90s and 2000s, it was pretty much a commonly-accepted fact that any attempts to adapt a video game to a film were destined to fail, thanks in no small part to major box office bombs like The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, in recent years, video game movies have been on an upward trend, thanks to better special effects and a greater commitment to the source material. Most of them still aren’t bank-breakers, but they are doing better. 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog turned in the highest performance of a video game movie at the time, proving that it is possible to make a good movie in this manner.

The box office performance of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has exceeded the profits of the first film, making it the new best-performing video game movie. Sonic 2 has brought in $71 million domestically, dwarfing the first film’s $58 million profit, and when added to international sales, has grossed a grand total of $141 million.

Reception to the film has been generally positive, with its current Rotten Tomatoes ratings sitting at 67% from critics and 97% from audiences. The consensus is that the film’s story is a bit generic, but otherwise inoffensive and enjoyable, bolstered by excellent performances from Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik.
