Looks like Kate Kane’s gonna need a new face.

Recently, The CW announced that its series adaptation of DC Comics’ Batwoman had been greenlit for a second season. It was assumed that the lead for the show, Ruby Rose, would be reprising her role as the titular superheroine. The key word there is “was.”

In a public statement, Rose announced that she was officially leaving the series, and that she would not be returning for the second season. “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose’s statement read. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

Rose has not given any official reason for her departure from the show, though some have theorized it to be due to a health complication. Last September, Rose had to undergo emergency surgery for two herniated discs, though it has not been divulged which production, if any, was the direct cause of this.

Rose’s departure has put Warner Bros. in a bit of a dicey predicament, but despite their lack of a lead, they have insisted that the show will go on. A new lead will be cast in the role of Batwoman some time before the second season begins production.
