The cult-hit series is coming to a close.

The CW’s Riverdale is one of those shows that sounds pretty innocuous on the surface, billing itself as a live-action adaptation of the classic Archie comics, but go deeper, and it gets downright bizarre. In no particular order, Riverdale featured Archie becoming a gangster, Jughead faking his death, multiple serial killers, and an entire dalliance with a cult. This bizarre drama made it a surprise hit, however, with the show running for six seasons so far.

Today, it was announced that the seventh season of Riverdale, set to air in CW’s midseason in 2023, will be the series’ conclusion.

“I am a big believer of giving series that have had a long run an appropriate send-off. We had a long conversation with Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] yesterday and he is thrilled with the decision,” CW boss Mark Pedowitz told Deadline, adding that “seven years is the right amount.”

“We are going to treat the show in the manner it deserves. It’s been an iconic pop culture star and we want to make sure that it goes out the right way.”

Back in December of 2021, one of the show’s stars, Cole Sprouse, discussed the potential end of the series in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “It’s been a wild ride,” Sprouse said. “I think I’m very lucky that people took to the show, and it’s created an absolutely stellar platform for all of the young actors on the show to — when the show eventually wraps itself — go, ‘My God, that was a huge opportunity,’ and it served as a huge opportunity for us.”
