Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Laver Cup

Rafael Nadal, the legendary Spanish tennis icon and 22-time Grand Slam singles champion, has announced his withdrawal from this month’s Laver Cup, stating his belief that “other players can help the team deliver the win” for Team Europe.

The 38-year-old has not competed since his quarter-final appearance alongside compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s doubles at the Paris Olympics in August. While Nadal did not specify any particular injury or health concern, he has previously indicated that 2024 would be his final season on the professional circuit.

“I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal expressed. “This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them, and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win.”

The Laver Cup, a prestigious team tournament contested between Team Europe and Team World, is set to begin in Berlin on September 20th. Nadal’s absence marks a significant change for Team Europe, as he has been a key player in his previous three Laver Cup appearances.

Earlier this year, Nadal had hoped to play a full schedule in 2024 but managed to compete in only one of the four majors—the French Open—where he faced a first-round exit against Alexander Zverev. After skipping Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics, he was hampered by a thigh problem in Paris, leading to a second-round singles loss to eventual gold medalist Novak Djokovic.

“I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup, and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Björn [Borg] in his final year as captain,” Nadal added. “I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar.”

Team Europe will now look to other talents to fill the void left by Nadal as they prepare to face Team World. Fans worldwide will undoubtedly miss seeing Nadal’s passion and skill on the court but respect his decision to prioritize the team’s success.
