Jasmine Paolini has made history by becoming the first Italian woman to reach a Wimbledon singles final, after an exhilarating semi-final victory over Donna Vekic. Paolini triumphed in one of the most captivating matches of the tournament, overcoming Vekic in a nail-biting contest that lasted two hours and 51 minutes – the longest women’s singles semi-final in Wimbledon history.

In a match filled with dramatic twists and turns, Paolini missed two match points and was trailing 8-7 in the deciding 10-point tie-break. However, she displayed remarkable resilience to recover and secure an unforgettable 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) victory.

Seventh seed Paolini will now face Czech 31st seed Barbora Krejcikova in the final. Krejcikova staged her own remarkable comeback, defeating the 2022 champion Elena Rybakina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

With this victory, Paolini has not only advanced to the final but has also won the hearts of tennis fans worldwide with her enthusiastic, bubbly personality and extraordinary shot-making skills. “I was serving really bad so I am so happy. This match I will remember forever,” said an emotional Paolini. “I was just trying to think about what to do on the court, point by point, because I was really in difficulty.”

Vekic, who struggled with an injury to her lower right arm, was visibly emotional during the match. She was seen in tears during the changeover before the tie-break as the match seemed to be slipping away. “I thought I was going to die in the third set,” said a tearful Vekic in the post-match news conference. “I had so much pain in my arm, in my leg. It was not easy out there, but I will recover. I was more crying because I had so much pain, I didn’t know how I could keep playing. My team tells me I can be proud of myself. It’s tough right now. It’s really tough to be positive right now. It was so close.”

The upcoming final promises to be an exciting clash as both Paolini and Krejcikova vie for their first Wimbledon title. With a new name set to be etched into the prestigious Venus Rosewater Dish, tennis fans eagerly await Saturday’s showdown.
