John Mulaney and Nick Kroll Fumble Succession Question on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
In a memorable and entertaining debut episode of the celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, comedians John Mulaney and Nick Kroll found themselves stumped by a question about the hit TV show Succession. The duo, known for their sharp wit and humor, humorously struggled with the trivia and ultimately fell short of the $125,000 mark.
Mulaney and Kroll had successfully used three of their four lifelines when they encountered the question: “The stand-out item at a 2024 auction of memorabilia from TV’s Succession was an extra-large Burberry tote bag famously described on the show as what?”
The multiple-choice answers were:
- A: Hideously expansive
- B: Farcically behemoth
- C: Ludicrously capacious
- D: Grotesquely sprawling
Despite their best efforts, the two stars chose “A: Hideously expansive,” a far cry from the correct answer, “C: Ludicrously capacious,” a phrase famously uttered by the character Tom Wambsgans in the show.
From the onset, Mulaney and Kroll seemed uncertain about the question. Mulaney quipped, “Not to be a jerk, but if it’s so famous, how come we don’t know about it?” The pair then decided to use their final lifeline, asking host Jimmy Kimmel for help.
Kimmel, admitting to being a fan of Succession but not knowing the answer, speculated that “ludicrously capacious” sounded excessive, ultimately siding with Mulaney and Kroll in considering “A” or “D”. His final suggestion of “A” proved to be incorrect.
After the reveal, Kimmel humorously deflected the blame, saying, “You know what, I blame the writers.”
Despite the misstep, Mulaney and Kroll walked away with $32,000, which they generously split between their chosen charities: Comedy vs. Cancer and The Innocence Project.
Their humorous and relatable gaffe has quickly become a talking point among fans, showcasing that even the funniest and brightest minds can stumble over pop culture trivia.
