Henry Winkler Recounts Hilarious FBI Encounter on SmartLess Podcast
Henry Winkler, renowned for his iconic role as Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli on Happy Days, shared a humorous and unexpected story during his recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast. The actor revealed a memorable encounter with the FBI that left him relieved and amused.
Winkler recounted the incident from his past when, at his apartment, he was enjoying some music on his Victrola after buying a Dan Fogelberg record. The peaceful moment took a sudden turn when three FBI agents showed up at his door. Winkler, initially fearing the worst, thought he was about to be busted for marijuana.
“I went to Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard, bought Dan Fogelberg, and was listening to it on my rented Victrola. When the door knocked and I saw three men with badges, I thought, ‘Oh no, you do not smell what you think you’re smelling,’” Winkler said with a chuckle.
Co-host Sean Hayes chimed in, clarifying, “There was some weed going on.”
To Winkler’s relief, the agents were not there for any narcotics-related issues but rather to meet the beloved TV character. “We’re with the FBI. We’re not here for that. We just wanted to meet the Fonz,” Winkler recalled them saying.
In response to co-host Jason Bateman’s remark about the misuse of FBI resources, Winkler showed his characteristic good humor. “I was so happy that I was not being put in handcuffs that I didn’t care what they did,” Winkler said.
The entertaining anecdote added to the lively discussion on the SmartLess podcast, where Winkler and hosts Bateman, Hayes, and Will Arnett also touched on various topics, from leaf-blowers to self-esteem.
Winkler, who first brought “The Fonz” to life in January 1974 and continued through July 1984, remains a beloved figure in entertainment. The episode showcases Winkler’s charm and humor, offering fans a delightful glimpse into his life beyond the screen.
