Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe made headlines once again, but this time, it wasn’t for his powerful kicks—it was for his powerful words. The outspoken athlete-turned-activist was spectacularly arrested and hauled out in handcuffs after delivering a scorching anti-MAGA rant at a Huntington Beach city council meeting.
The fiery exchange erupted over a controversial plaque outside the local library. The commemorative marker, meant to celebrate the library’s 50th anniversary, spells out “MAGA” using adjectives like magical, alluring, galvanizing, and adventurous. Adding fuel to the fire, the plaque also borrows phrases from Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, including “hope and change” and “build back better,” before concluding with Donald Trump’s famous slogan: “Making America Great Again.”
Kluwe, never one to shy away from a fight, took the microphone and torched the council’s decision to approve the plaque unanimously.

A Speech That Shook the Room
During his impassioned remarks, Kluwe did not mince words, painting the MAGA movement as a direct threat to democracy. He accused it of erasing trans people, promoting racism, pushing censorship and book bans, cutting education, and dismantling government oversight. He didn’t stop there—Kluwe went as far as to declare:
“MAGA is explicitly a Nazi movement. You may have replaced a swastika with a red hat, but that is what it is.”
Tensions soared as he then announced his intent to engage in “the time-honored American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience.” As he stepped forward toward the council, police officers swiftly intervened, grabbing him and forcibly removing him from the chamber.
Dragged Out in Handcuffs But Unshaken
The dramatic scene saw multiple officers escorting Kluwe out of the building, his hands bound behind his back. Witnesses reported a mix of gasps and cheers from the audience as the former Minnesota Vikings star was taken into custody.
Kluwe spent about four hours in police custody before being released. However, he harbored no ill will toward the officers who arrested him, later describing them as “just doing their job.”
