Indian Olympic champion enters exclusive club with historic throw at Doha Diamond League

Doha, Qatar. Indian athletics star Neeraj Chopra reached a major career milestone on May 16, 2025, when he crossed the 90 metre mark in men’s javelin for the first time. Competing at the Doha Diamond League, Chopra registered a best throw of 90.23 metres, becoming the first Indian athlete to achieve this landmark and securing his place among the world’s elite javelin throwers.

The historic throw came during Chopra’s third attempt of the competition. After opening with a solid 88.44 metres and following it with a foul, Chopra delivered a powerful and controlled effort that sailed beyond the long awaited barrier. The moment was met with applause from the crowd and immediate recognition from fellow athletes and officials at the venue.

Chopra finished second in the event, with Germany’s Julian Weber taking first place with a throw of 91.06 metres. Despite not winning the competition, the focus quickly shifted to Chopra’s achievement, as the 90 metre mark is widely regarded as a defining benchmark in men’s javelin.

The 90.23 metre throw also marked a new personal best and national record for Chopra. It surpassed his previous best of 89.94 metres, which he set in 2022. With this performance, Chopra became only the 25th javelin thrower in history to cross the 90 metre distance, highlighting the rarity and significance of the achievement.

Neeraj Chopra has been one of India’s most consistent and celebrated athletes over the past decade. He won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, silver at the World Athletics Championships, and has delivered strong performances across Diamond League events.
