NBA Considers Disney World for Season Restart

The court’s about to get a lot more magical.

The NBA was one of the first sports leagues to suspend their operations when the pandemic spread to the United States, pausing operations in mid-March after Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19. With the season delayed so long, not to mention the loss of ticket sales and general fan presence, the NBA is going to be out a few hundred million dollars at the very least. The organization is eager to get things bouncing again, and they’ve been on the hunt for an appropriate comeback venue.

According to The Athletic, one of the NBA’s top choices for a restart venue is Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Disney World officially resumed operations just yesterday, May 20, albeit with an understandable increase of health and safety restrictions on visitors. Restrictions or not, though, Disney World does have foot traffic right now, and the NBA needs it. While nothing has been officially decided, sources familiar with the matter claim the NBA is in “advanced talks” with Disney, and are considering hosting all foreseeable games at the resort for all 30 of their teams.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver gave teams the go-ahead earlier this month to reopen their training facilities, provided players and staff comply with current health regulations. NBA players are currently dealing with a 25% pay cut as the league tries to reorder its finances after several months in stasis. There is no official word as of yet when league play will resume, but according to league executives, they’re currently shooting for some time in mid-July.
