Mufasa Movie Pays Heartfelt Tribute to James Earl Jones After His Passing
A Heartfelt Tribute to a Great Man
Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King opens with a powerful tribute to the legendary actor James Earl Jones, who passed away on September 9 at the age of 93. Fans of the iconic voice behind Mufasa were in for an emotional surprise when the film kicked off with a familiar and hauntingly beautiful sound — Jones’ famous speech from the 1994 animated The Lion King.
Against a black screen, Jones’ voice fills the theater, echoing his lines as the wise king, Mufasa, speaking to his son Simba. “Look at the stars,” Jones says, reminding viewers of the eternal presence of the great kings of the past. “Whenever you feel alone, just remember… those kings will always be there to guide you, and so will I.”
After this heart-touching moment, the screen fades to black, and a message reads, “In remembrance of James Earl Jones.”
‘MUFASA: THE LION KING’ will begin with a tribute to the late James Earl Jones.
“It felt like we had all lost a patriarch. We had all lost this man who meant so much. It felt like there was no way you could sit in this movie and not honor him in some way,” says Barry Jenkins.… pic.twitter.com/2iULItqJ0a

While Jones did not record any new material for the Mufasa prequel, director Barry Jenkins knew they had to honor the actor’s legacy. Reflecting on Jones’ passing, Jenkins admitted to being emotionally impacted. “I was actually doing some early, early press, almost an hour before Mr. James Earl Jones passed,” Jenkins said. “I wanted to find a way to honor that voice that so many people consider a surrogate father figure. For so many of us, his voice is synonymous with what a father-son dynamic should be.”

Jenkins, who had grown up without a father, emphasized the profound impact of Jones’ voice and the importance of preserving it. He also revealed that he went back into the film’s edit, listening to every line Jones had recorded, to ensure the tribute felt as authentic as possible. “It wasn’t an intellectual choice,” he said, “It was a gut choice.”
The tribute is woven seamlessly into the story, honoring both the man and the role that became an indelible part of film history. With Braelyn Rankins voicing a young Mufasa and Aaron Pierre taking over for the majority of the film, Mufasa: The Lion King takes viewers on a journey across Africa, telling the origin story of the future king of Pride Rock.
As fans prepare for the release on December 20, it’s clear that this film is more than just a prequel — it’s a tribute to a man whose voice shaped a beloved character, leaving an emotional legacy that will continue to resonate with audiences.
