In a moment that blended championship celebration with a touch of unexpected spectacle, global football icon Lionel Messi and his teammates from Inter Miami CF stepped into the historic halls of the White House on Thursday — and they didn’t arrive empty-handed.
The visit marked the team’s official celebration of their 2025 Major League Soccer Cup triumph, a milestone victory that secured Inter Miami’s first-ever league championship after defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the final.
But the ceremony quickly turned into something far more memorable.
Standing beside U.S. President Donald Trump, Messi and Inter Miami’s leadership presented a trio of striking gifts. First came a customized Inter Miami jersey bearing the number 47 — a nod to Trump’s position as the 47th President of the United States. Next was a commemorative soccer ball celebrating the club’s historic MLS title.

Then came the showstopper.
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas revealed a limited-edition Inter Miami pink Tudor watch, specially engraved with Trump’s initials. The unexpected luxury gift drew attention from attendees and added a splash of Miami flair to the formal ceremony.
For Messi, the visit itself was historic.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was making his first appearance at the White House, something Trump made sure to highlight during his remarks. Walking alongside the Argentine legend, the president also shared a personal anecdote: his son Barron is a huge fan of Messi — and had the chance to meet the football superstar earlier in the day.
The ceremony, however, had its share of surprising moments.
While praising the championship team, Trump briefly veered into comments about international affairs before returning to sports — even mentioning Messi’s long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, drawing amused reactions from the crowd and a slightly awkward smile from the Argentine star.
Beyond politics and football banter, the event attracted additional star power. Former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez attended the celebration in his role as an ambassador for the city of Miami, joining the players and officials gathered to honor the club’s rapid rise.
Inter Miami’s journey to the top has been nothing short of remarkable. Founded only eight years ago by an ownership group that includes football legend David Beckham, the club reached new heights last season with Messi leading the charge. The Argentine maestro delivered 29 goals in 28 appearances, powering the team to a 3–1 MLS Cup victory.
Now, after a brief stop at America’s most famous address, the focus shifts back to the pitch.
Messi and Inter Miami return to action this Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, where they are set to face D.C. United as they continue their quest to defend their championship.
For one afternoon, though, football, politics, and a splash of Miami pink combined to create a White House moment that few in attendance — including Messi himself — are likely to forget. ⚽🇺🇸⌚
