A major legal dispute has emerged involving global football superstar Lionel Messi, following allegations tied to his absence from two high-profile exhibition matches in the United States.

Miami-based event promoter VID has filed a lawsuit in South Florida against Messi and the Argentine Football Association (AFA), citing claims of fraud and breach of contract. The complaint alleges that the company suffered substantial financial losses after Messi did not participate in the matches as expected.

According to the filing, VID entered into an agreement in August 2025, paying approximately $7 million for exclusive rights to organize two international friendlies—Argentina vs. Venezuela and Argentina vs. Puerto Rico—scheduled for October. Central to the agreement was Messi’s participation, with an expectation that he would play at least 30 minutes in each match unless prevented by injury.

However, VID claims that Messi did not take the field during the first match and instead remained in a luxury suite. The company further alleges that he was not injured, pointing to his appearance the following day for Inter Miami CF, where he reportedly delivered a strong performance.

The second match also encountered challenges. Originally planned for Chicago, the event was relocated to Fort Lauderdale due to reported civil unrest, resulting in reduced attendance capacity and additional financial losses.

VID states that the combined impact of Messi’s absence and logistical changes led to losses amounting to several million dollars. The company also claims that assurances were made regarding future exhibition matches to offset damages, but those commitments were not fulfilled.

The lawsuit seeks financial compensation, though the total amount has not been publicly specified.

Representatives for Messi and the AFA have not yet issued official statements regarding the matter.

This case underscores the significant commercial influence of elite athletes and the expectations tied to their participation in global sporting events.
