This is decidedly not fetch.

Tina Fey’s Mean Girls is unironically one of the best movies of the early 2000s; it’s funny, it’s poignant, and it is immensely quotable. People still say “get in losers” when they’re going places with their friends, and I personally know a couple of folks who are still trying to make fetch happen. It stands to reason that such a great movie would make a great Broadway play, which it totally did when it opened on April 2018. Since that opening, the show has been run over 800 times, grossing well over $120 million. Sadly, due to, what else, the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems this modern classic of a show has had its lifespan cut short.

Saturday Night Live veteran and Mean Girls producer Lorne Michaels announced yesterday that Mean Girls has officially ended its Broadway run, and will not be returning to the August Wilson Theatre, even after it reopens from the lockdown that’s been in place since March.

“Thank you to the brilliant creative team, cast and crew that brought Mean Girls to life from our first reading to final performance,” said Michaels. “We remain excited to bring this musical to the big screen, relaunch the tour and prepare for a London production. I look forward to the day, hopefully soon, when theaters can open their doors again.”

While the ending of the show is unfortunate, those who were part of the process of its creation have no regrets. Tina Fey herself spoke fondly about the show’s tenure, saying “The chance to bring this show to Broadway, with such a talented young ensemble and five astounding female leads, has been a dream come true.”

“And to our fierce and dedicated fans– the limit of our gratitude does not exist,” Fey added.

As for Broadway itself, the theater district is still closed due to the pandemic, and is projected to remain as such until June at the absolute earliest.
