Live-Action ‘Hercules’ to be TikTok-Inspired Musical
The next live-action Disney film is set to be more “experimental.”
Disney’s Hercules, released in 1997, was an animated adaptation of the classic Greek myth of a young demigod seeking to become a true hero. The film is still regarded to this day thanks to a combination of likeable characters and catchy gospel musical numbers. As Disney goes down the line of classic movies to give the live-action treatment, Hercules’ number has come up, but apparently they’re trading out the gospel for something more modern.
Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed Avengers: Endgame, revealed to Variety that their personal studio, AGBO, will be teaming up with Disney in the near future to produce the live-action Hercules.
“We have an amazing relationship with them that we’ve built over a decade,” said Joe Russo. “I think we have a point of view on how they can stretch the limits of their IP moving forward, rather than playing IP management.”
The Russos confirm Disney’s live-action ‘HERCULES’ will be a modern musical inspired by TikTok.
“Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like & feels like?”

Compared to the other live-action remakes, though, the Russos are planning to take Hercules in a more experimental direction. The film will still be a musical, but the Russos are looking to create something more in line with the TikTok-viewing youth of today.
“There are questions about how you translate it as a musical,” Russo said. “Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”
