For the first time in his career, LeBron James will not suit up on opening night. The Lakers confirmed on October 9 that the 40-year-old star is dealing with right-side sciatica, a nerve issue causing pain from the lower back through the hip and leg. The flare-up, traced to irritation in his glute area, surfaced during preseason and has sidelined him for at least three to four weeks.

James will miss the Lakers’ home opener against the Golden State Warriors on October 21, ending his streak of 22 straight opening-night appearances. The team expects to re-evaluate him by late October, aiming for full recovery without pushing a return. It’s the cautious call for a veteran entering his 23rd season and the second year of his $101 million extension.

LeBron also missed the entire preseason, skipping all practices and exhibition games. Head coach JJ Redick said the forward is on his “own timeline,” focusing on long-term readiness over short-term risk.

Without their primary playmaker, the Lakers will look to Luka Dončić, Anthony Davis, and Austin Reaves to carry the offense. Jarred Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia could see added minutes at forward, while Marcus Smart or Dalton Knecht may anchor smaller lineups built around defense and pace.

The early challenge comes fast: eight games in 13 days, a test of LA’s depth in a competitive Western Conference. The team’s priority remains clear—keep LeBron healthy for the playoff push, not October headlines.

Fans have flooded X with support and concern. One post read, “Tough break for LA, but Bron’s durability shines through.” Another said, “First opener he’s missed at 40. Get well soon, King.”

Even from the sidelines, LeBron’s presence looms large. For now, the Lakers start their season without him, hoping the recovery clock ticks quickly toward his return.
