John Mulaney Signs with Comedy Central for Two New Specials
The Sack Lunch Bunch will appear in two new specials.
Back in December, Netflix premiered John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch, a musical comedy special themed after classic kids variety shows starring the eponymous John Mulaney alongside a cast of very talented kids. It was a pretty good special, featuring special guests like David Byrne and Jake Gyllenhaal, and currently maintains a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was so good, in fact, that Comedy Central wants more of the group.
Mulaney announced today that he has officially signed a deal with Comedy Central for two more comedy specials featuring himself and the Sack Lunch Bunch. Mulaney’s been working mostly with Netflix over the past decade, including the Sack Lunch Bunch special and his Radio City stand-up show, Kid Gorgeous. This will be the first time since 2012 that Mulaney has worked with Comedy Central since they produced his previous stand-up special, New in Town.
“I was an intern at Comedy Central when I was barely older than the kids in the ‘Sack Lunch Bunch.,’” Mulaney said. “I wasn’t a very good intern, so I am psyched they hired me again. We are thrilled to bring these specials to Comedy Central: a place where I have had so many good times.”
Comedy Central is equally excited to be working with Mulaney once again. “We couldn’t be more excited about John’s return to Comedy Central and hope this is just the beginning of a long-standing partnership,” said Chris McCarthy, president of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Brands.
Mulaney, formerly a writer on Saturday Night Live and three-time host of the famous variety show, has been moving up in the world quite a bit in the last few years, lending his voice talent to Big Mouth and Spider-Man: Enter the Spider-Verse. It isn’t yet known when the new Sack Lunch Bunch specials will actually release (or when they’ll begin production, for the obvious reason), but if they’re anywhere as good as the first special, they’ll be worth waiting for.
