Jacob deGrom Nearly Ready to Return from Rehab
DeGrom pitched a solid game as part of his physical rehab.
Jacob deGrom, ace pitcher of the New York Mets, hasn’t actually played on the Major League stage for a while due to a stress reaction in his right scapula sustained near the start of the season. DeGrom was sidelined for most of the season due to his injury, but he’s begun gradually working his way back up to playing shape by playing rehab games in the minor leagues.
On Wednesday, he pitched for four innings with Triple-A Syracuse, starting a bit rough but eventually working his way into multiple consecutive strikeouts. Assuming deGrom’s condition doesn’t suddenly worsen, he could return to Citi Field by the end of the week.
“The plan right now, if everything progresses well, is to pitch for us next time,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. “But that could change by what we hear [Thursday] or the next day.”
“It was good to see him get to almost 70 pitches. That was a good sign,” Showalter added. “We’ll get arms around it here in the next day or so, but we hope that his next outing’s with us. We’ll see.”
Jacob DeGrom pitched over 4 innings today, facing 13 batters. He struck out 10 of them.
When asked for comment he had this to say:

Showalter has had talks with deGrom about his readiness to return to the major stage, assuring that the pitcher knows what kind of shape he needs to be in to play at that level. The two of them have agreed that, if deGrom is not determined to be in the best possible shape, he’ll undergo another round of rehab games.
