The legendary actor was memorialized by his former co-stars.

Earlier this week, it was announced that James Caan, an Oscar-nominated actor best known for his roles in classic films like The Godfather, El Dorado, and Elf, had passed away. At the time of writing, Caan’s cause of death has not been publicly divulged. He was 82.

In the last two days, Caan’s family has received an outpouring of support and remembrances from his fans and those who have worked with him over the years.

“It’s hard to believe that he won’t be in the world any more because he was so alive and daring,” Al Pacino, who starred in The Godfather alongside Caan, told PA in a statement obtained by the BBC. “A great actor, a brilliant director and my dear friend,” he added. “I’m gonna miss him.”

“Jimmy was not just a great actor with total commitment and a venturesome spirit, but he had a vitality in the core of his being that drove everything from his art and friendship to athletics and very good times,” said Michael Mann, director of the 1981 film Thief, in which Caan starred.

“Loved him very much. Always wanted to be like him,” said actor and filmmaker Adam Sandler. “So happy I got to know him. Never ever stopped laughing when I was around that man. His movies were best of the best. We all will miss him terribly. Thinking of his family and sending my love.”

“We were lucky enough to work with James Caan on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. He brought a pathos and authenticity to the role of Tim Lockwood that held the film together. RIP to a legend,” said filmmaker Christopher Miller.
