Hollywood Didn’t Want Leonardo DiCaprio to Keep His Real Name

Leonardo DiCaprio almost had a very different name in Hollywood, and it’s hard to imagine now.
The Oscar-winning star, who has been in the spotlight for decades, recently chatted on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast about his early days as a young actor. That’s when he revealed that his very first agent thought “Leonardo DiCaprio” wasn’t going to work in show business.
“They told me, ‘Your name is too ethnic,’” Leo shared. “I said, ‘What do you mean? It’s Leonardo DiCaprio.’ And they go, ‘No, no… your new name is Lenny Williams.’”
The actor admitted he was stunned. “I remember asking, ‘What is Lenny?’” he laughed. But luckily, his dad stepped in right away. “Over my dead body,” his father told the agent. He also reminded young Leo to stay focused, saying, “One day, you’ll get your time. Just keep going.”
Leonardo’s father was right. At just 16, DiCaprio got a major role alongside Robert De Niro in This Boy’s Life. That was a breakthrough for him, and after that he acted in some of the most popular films, like Titanic, The Revenant, Inception, and many more.
Now, decades later, the name ‘Leonardo DiCaprio’ is one of the most popular names in Hollywood.
