Hard Rock Stadium to Host Drive-In Theater
That’s a whole lotta theater.
If there’s been a single upshot to current circumstances, it’s been the resurgence of drive-ins. Drive-in theaters, both previously existing ones and quickly established ones, have managed to attract a modest profit in a time where there’s no other option to see a movie in public. Considering the potential for a movie-seeking customer base, all one would need is a big enough slab of real estate to host a lot of cars and a screen to show stuff on. Say, you know what can fit a lot of cars and has big screens installed? A football stadium.
The Miami Dolphins announced yesterday that their home turf, Hard Rock Stadium, will be temporarily converted into a gigantic drive-in movie theater. The inside of the stadium, currently equipped with four massive video screens, will be able to host approximately 230 cars at any given time. Concessions will be available on-site, and will feature an online ordering system, complete with delivery service, so patrons won’t need to leave their cars. The screens will show classic movies, concerts, and ceremonies, as well as sizzle reels from the Dolphins’ personal history.
In addition to the drive-in theater, a second, open-air theater will be created on the property’s South Plaza area. This area will feature paired seats separated by large planters, all facing a large screen on the outside of the stadium. The South Plaza theater will be configured for smaller audiences who want to see a movie, but don’t want to stay in the car. The same programming and amenities will be available there as those in the drive-in.
“We’ve spent several weeks planning this to be able to provide people with a safe option to go out and enjoy movies, classic Dolphins content, concerts, and celebrate 2020 graduates,” Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium Vice Chairman and CEO Tom Garfinkel said in a press statement. “It’s a fundamental human need to physically experience and celebrate events and experiences together, and we’re trying to provide options for everyone, where they can be safely socially distant and socially present at the same time.”
