Ghana Twitter Employees Accuse Elon Musk of Discrimination

Laid-off employees have accused Musk of deliberate efforts to undersell and silence them.

Twitter’s widespread employee layoffs, sparked by new owner Elon Musk, have affected not just their offices in the United States, but their various global headquarters. The headquarters for Twitter Africa, in particular, is based in Ghana, where the laid-off employees are launching a lawsuit against Musk on the grounds of discrimination.

According to the laid-off employees, the severance pay and benefits they received following their layoffs are dramatically lower than those received by western Twitter employees. Not only is this discriminatory, but a violation of Ghana’s labor laws.

“It is clear that Twitter, Inc. under Mr. Elon Musk is either deliberately or recklessly flouting the laws of Ghana, is operating in bad faith and in a manner that seeks to silence and intimidate former employees into accepting any terms unilaterally thrown at them,” a group of former employees said in a formal letter to Ghana’s Chief Labour Officer.

The letter also notes that no effort at negotiation between Twitter and the employees with made, with the presented terms merely sent to every laid-off employee’s email with no further details or discussion.

“The employees are distressed, humiliated, and intimidated by this turn of events. There are non-Ghanaian employees, some with young families, who moved here to take up jobs and have now been left unceremoniously in the lurch, with no provision for repatriation expenses and no way to communicate with Twitter, Inc. and discuss or plead their case,” the letter adds.

“It was very vague, did not talk about outstanding leave or paid time off, and just asked us to sign if we agree. I never bothered to go back to the document because it is rubbish and is still in violation of labor laws here,” an anonymous former Twitter employee told CNN.

Twitter has not publicly commented on the matter as of writing.
