Filmed ‘Hamilton’ Performance Coming to Disney+
Because you can’t exactly go to the theater right now.
Hamilton is one of the most universally-beloved plays to be produced in the last decade, to the point that the show has become the current face of Broadway and beyond. A biography of Alexander Hamilton, the show draws musical inspiration from all sorts of genres and performance styles. This on-point performance has landed it 11 awards, including Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize for drama. The show was supposed to have a March run at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, but unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire schedule had to be cancelled. If you’re dying to see this musical sensation, though, Disney has a solution for you, provided you’re a Disney+ subscriber.
Disney announced today that they will be releasing a filmed Hamilton performance for streaming on Disney+ on July 3, rather fittingly right before Independence Day. Disney purchased the rights to a filmed Hamilton show (to the tune of $75 million) back in February, and was planning on releasing it in theaters in October 2021, but decided to move the schedule up since everyone’s eyes are currently glued to streaming services. If you’re worried about the performers, don’t be; this particular performance of Hamilton was actually filmed back in 2016 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City, featuring the entire original Broadway cast.
