England’s Rugby Football Union (RFU) faces another significant change in its coaching staff as Felix Jones, the national team’s defence coach, has resigned from his position after just seven months in the role.

Departure Details

Felix Jones, 37, joined England’s coaching set-up in January 2024, following a distinguished career with South Africa, where he contributed to the team’s consecutive Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023. Despite a 12-month notice period outlined in his contract, Jones has stepped down earlier than anticipated. The RFU has chosen not to comment on his resignation at this time.

Impact of Departure

Jones’ resignation comes on the heels of Aled Walters’ departure to join Ireland’s coaching team, which has already left a notable gap in England’s support staff. Walters and Jones, who previously worked together at Munster and with the Springboks, had developed a close working relationship.

Jones had been instrumental in implementing an aggressive blitz defence strategy for England, marking a significant shift in the team’s defensive approach. His departure represents a substantial setback, particularly as he was seen as a crucial component of the coaching setup under head coach Steve Borthwick.

Future Staffing Changes

The RFU is now tasked with finding a replacement for Jones, while also addressing other staffing changes. Kevin Sinfield, who had initially announced his departure from the role of skills coach this summer, is expected to remain in a part-time capacity following the recent tour of New Zealand. However, Sinfield’s future role remains uncertain.

Additionally, Borthwick faces the challenge of recruiting a new strength and conditioning department, with both Walters and Tom Tombleson leaving their positions this month.

Looking Ahead

The RFU’s immediate focus will be on filling the vacant roles within the coaching and support staff to ensure that England’s preparations for future competitions remain on track. The search for a new defence coach will be critical as the team continues to build towards its upcoming challenges.
