England’s head coach Matthew Mott has emphasized the need for his team to “throw the first punch” against India in their crucial T20 World Cup semi-final match. The defending champions, who have had a challenging journey through the group stages, are set to face unbeaten India in Guyana on Thursday at 15:30 BST.

Despite their struggles, advancing on net run-rate at the expense of Scotland, and finishing second in their Super 8s pool behind South Africa, Mott remains confident in England’s ability to rise to the occasion. “We haven’t quite clicked as a whole unit yet,” Mott told the BBC. “Bits and pieces have worked at different times but our ‘A-game’ is certainly enough to match with India.”

India has demonstrated impressive form throughout the tournament, notably defeating Australia by 24 runs to top their Super 8s group. In contrast, England faced setbacks with losses to Australia and South Africa, along with a washed-out match against Scotland. They secured their semi-final spot with decisive victories over Oman and Namibia.

“We’ve had to play some ugly cricket at times,” Mott acknowledged. “But from here on in, it’s time to be the frontrunners. It’s time to more or less throw the first punch at India and then try to get our nose in front and never give it back.”

The semi-final clash has also been surrounded by discussions about the lack of a reserve day, with rain forecasted for Thursday. Unlike the semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan in Trinidad, which has a reserve day, England and India will have up to 250 minutes of extra time to complete their match. If no result is possible, India will progress as the group winners.

Mott expressed his preference for a reserve day in an “ideal world,” suggesting it is something the International Cricket Council “needs to look at long term.” He also downplayed concerns about India’s pre-determined semi-final venue, stating, “We were quite aware there was every chance that we’d be here in Guyana.”

The Providence Stadium is expected to feature a surface favorable to spinners, which could benefit India’s spin-heavy squad. England, meanwhile, might consider including uncapped left-arm spinner Tom Hartley in their lineup. However, Mott indicated that drastic changes are unlikely.

Reflecting on the previous T20 World Cup semi-final where England thrashed India by 10 wickets, Mott highlighted the need to stay focused on the present. “We’re not looking back at all with this group,” he said. “One of its big mantras is staying present. They are a different team, too, than when we took them on.”

The highly anticipated semi-final promises to be a thrilling encounter as England seeks to defend their title against a formidable Indian side.
