Disney Cuts Fox from 20th Branding

In the battle of mouse and fox, the mouse has emerged triumphant.

It’s still kind of surreal to think that Disney owns Fox now. They used to be the absolute heads of competition, constantly battling it out to see who would maintain dominance over the entertainment world, and now they’re just one thing. Every time I see Fox branding, I have to put a little mental asterisk next to the logo that says “but actually Disney, though.” Apparently, this is a real problem that Disney has picked up on, so in the interest of brand clarity, Disney has done a bit of corporate pruning.

Disney announced yesterday that 20th Century Fox Television, one of the most well-known brands in the entire entertainment industry as well as one of my favorite post-episode logos, will have two words axed from all future branding: “century” and “Fox.” So from now on, it’s just 20th Television. Kind of loses some of the impact, but apparently they’ll be keeping the classic logo with the big statue and the searchlights, just with the name changed, so that’s nice, at least.

This decision follows up on Disney’s move to drop the Fox name from 20th Century Fox Studios, the former company’s movie division, at the beginning of the year, changing to the slightly more interesting name of 20th Century Studios. The remaining properties from the Fox network, such as Fox News and Fox Sports, will be keeping the Fox in their names for the time being. Television shows that used the 20th Century Fox logo will begin displaying the new logo some time in the fall.

“Our new studio names and logos mark a new day for ABC Signature, 20th Television and Touchstone Television while honoring their rich histories and the creative power of The Walt Disney Company,” Disney television studios president Craig Hunegs said in a statement.
