Disney’s never been one to let franchises breathe a moment.

Cruella, the sequel/spin-off to Disney’s classic animated film 101 Dalmatians, has been running both in theaters and on Disney+ for about two weeks now. Aside from a new surge of memes centered around the reason why Cruella hates Dalmatians so much (spoiler: it’s exactly as silly as you think it is), the reception has been very positive. So far, the film has turned a $48.5 million box office profit, and that’s in spite of the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic is still a real concern keeping many out of theaters. As has often been the case with Disney in the past, as soon as it’s clear that a property is profitable, they immediately get to work milking the ever-loving heck out of it.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney already has a sequel to Cruella in the works. Both the film’s director Craig Gillespie and its writer Tony McNamara are set to return for the sequel, and while it has not yet been confirmed whether Emma Stone would continue to don the iconic black and white, it’d be rather silly if they didn’t get her again, so it’s a safe bet.

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson told Variety. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

“I feel like we’ve only just met her,” Gillespie told Collider of Cruella as a character. “She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand. I’d love to see where that takes her and how you could almost destroy her from inside out, if she’s not careful with all that power.”
