Romanian chess grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko has been removed from the Spanish Team Championship after being accused of using a mobile phone during his matches. Shevchenko, currently ranked 69th in the world, was disqualified following allegations that he broke the competition’s rules.

The Spanish Chess Federation (FEDA) stated that Shevchenko, who was playing for the Silla – Integrant Col·lectius team, was expelled due to “the usage of mobile devices during his matches.” His previous results in the first two rounds were changed from draws to losses.

The alleged incident occurred early in the tournament. Suspicion arose when Shevchenko spent long periods away from the chessboard. A mobile phone, along with a note that reportedly resembled his handwriting, was later found in a restroom. This led to an investigation by the tournament officials.
FEDA emphasized its strong stance against cheating, stating, “We are committed to maintaining fair play in chess and will act firmly in any case of cheating. We deeply regret this incident and want to make it clear that this behavior does not reflect the performance of the rest of his team.”

Shevchenko denies any wrongdoing. The Romanian Chess Federation (RCF) has said they are waiting for “solid evidence” before making any final conclusions. “Until more information is provided, we stand by our player,” the RCF stated.

Shevchenko, who previously played for Ukraine before representing Romania, earned his grandmaster title in 2017. He now faces a tough situation as the investigation continues.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about cheating in chess, especially with the use of technology. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is expected to review the situation further.
