Biden Uncertain on Passage of Student Debt Forgiveness
While the President is confident in his decision, he isn’t sure it’ll clear the Supreme Court.
Earlier this week, the United States Supreme Court heard statements for and against the passage of President Joe Biden’s proposed plan to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt for American citizens. The court will need time to deliberate on their decision, and they may not reach a decision for several months. In the meantime, President Biden spoke frankly about the chances of the bill passing.
“I’m confident we’re on the right side of the law. I’m not confident about the outcome of the decision yet,” the President told reporters at a press meeting at the White House.
Several of Biden’s key allies in the pursuit of passage spoke as well, highlighting that while they aren’t sure how the conservative-majority Court will respond, they are confident they made their case as best as they could.
“The plan that we put forward in August is the plan that we have, which is also a plan that you heard the solicitor general really defend in a strong and powerful way yesterday. And that’s our plan, and we believe in our legal authority to get that done and get that implemented,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
“It is time for the Supreme Court to stop playing politics and just apply the law and let us cancel this debt.”

“Our focus right now is getting this done. You saw the solicitor general really give a strong argument yesterday in front of the highest court in the land. There’s a reason we took it to the Supreme Court,” Jean-Pierre added.
