Greta Gerwig, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Lady Bird and Little Women, recently revealed in a candid interview with CinemaBled that she had hoped to feature Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan in cameo roles for the upcoming Barbie movie. Gerwig, who had previously worked with both actors on her previous films, expressed her disappointment at their inability to participate.
When asked about the potential cameos, Gerwig explained, “Well, it was always going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because [Saoirse] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And, of course, it’s brilliant.” Ronan’s commitments as a producer seemed to limit her availability for a larger role in the film.
Gerwig also shared her plans for a “specialty cameo” with Chalamet, expressing her frustration that both actors were unable to participate. “I love them so much,” she admitted. The filmmaker’s affection for Chalamet and Ronan was evident, comparing their absence to feeling like she was doing something without her own children. “I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom,” she added.

As for Chalamet and Ronan, they have been busy with other projects. Chalamet has recently been seen in the musical film Wonka, where he portrays the iconic character Willy Wonka and is also filming Dune: Part Two. On the other hand, Ronan has been occupied with her first foray into producing, working on a film titled The Outrun.
In a previous interview with PEOPLE in September 2022, Ronan expressed her disappointment at not being able to join the Barbie movie. “I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were filming there,” she explained. “There was a whole character I was going to play – another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”
While fans of Gerwig, Chalamet, and Ronan may be disappointed by their absence from the Barbie movie, it’s clear that their busy schedules and commitments to other projects prevented their involvement. Nevertheless, their collaboration on previous films has left a lasting impression on Gerwig, who undoubtedly cherishes the opportunity to work with them. As fans eagerly anticipate the release of the Barbie movie, they can still look forward to witnessing the creative brilliance of Gerwig and the talented cast she assembles.
