After being dropped by the Panthers, Mayfield has already reestablished himself.

Earlier this week, the Carolina Panthers announced that they would be waiving the contract of their quarterback, Baker Mayfield, releasing him from the team and letting him loose to pursue other positions. While this can be a bit of a downer for some players, it seems that Mayfield wasted no time being depressed and immediately moved onwards and upwards.

Thursday night saw his inaugural game with the Los Angeles Rams as they took on the Las Vegas Raiders, where Mayfield immediately became a game-changer. He led the team in a major nail-biter of a game, before ultimately clinching it 17-16 with a last-minute touchdown pass. This victory has both reinvigorated the Rams following a lengthy losing streak and reignited Mayfield’s prominence in the game.

“This is up there,” Mayfield told reporters following the game, referring to the other highs of his career. “Originally, I was angry about having to go through so many coaching changes and learn so many new things, but it sure helped right there. … They put some good plays out there and put me in a good position to win.”

Being a new addition, Mayfield was not the starting quarterback for the Rams, but was swapped in later in the game for their usual QB, John Wolford. “I knew I wasn’t going to start,” Mayfield said. “Honestly, we were just seeing how John was going to feel, just how that was going to go and just going to play it out. I was going to be ready no matter what.”

“To be honest with you, I was completely shocked they lined up in press coverage with 15 seconds left,” Mayfield said of the winning pass. “I really thought they’re going to try to pop out and play zone but they just stayed with it. Their weak side safety stayed down. Van’s a great go ball runner. He won off the line and did a good job.”
