Austin Butler Shares His Side of the Viral Cannes Bee Moment with Emma Stone

“I was just trying to blow the bee away, not at her” says Butler.
Austin Butler wants everybody to know that he wasn’t leading a bee attack on Emma Stone during the Cannes Film Festival.
The Oscar-nominated actor walked the red carpet with Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal for the premiere of their movie ‘Eddington’ on May 16 in France. What should’ve been a celebrity moment was quickly waylaid when a bumblebee made Stone its target.
A video of the moment went viral across social media. In the video clip, it looks like Butler blew the bee right at Stone. Fans started joking online that Austin Butler is the villain of the night. However, Butler says that that’s not what really happened at the festival.
Austin Butler appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on August 12 and shared his side of the viral Cannes bee moment. He said, “Emma said, ‘Bee, bee, bee!’ and when I looked, there really was a bumblebee coming for her. My first reaction was to blow it away. It looks like I was blowing it at her, but I swear I wasn’t.”
Butler added that “he didn’t want to hurt the bee.” It is the reason he went for the gentler option. He joked, “I was just trying my best to get it to fly off. Looking back at the clip, yeah, it does look a little suspicious.”
Emma Stone also backed him up during her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in June. She called him “a sweetheart and a half.” She said, “There is no way he wanted that bee in my face.” Instead, she jokingly blamed Pedro Pascal and said, “If anyone brought the bee, it was Pedro.”
Butler returns to the big screen in a film that also stars Matt Smith, Zoë Kravitz, and Bad Bunny. You can see the movie in theaters on August 29.
