Alyssa Farah Griffin, a co-host of The View and former Donald Trump staffer, voiced her shock and disappointment over Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ recent comments aimed at Vice President Kamala Harris. During a live episode of The View, Griffin addressed a controversial remark made by Sanders, in which the Arkansas Governor suggested that Harris “has nothing keeping her humble” because she doesn’t have children.
Griffin, who worked closely with Sanders during her time in the Trump administration, was visibly taken aback by the remarks. “I watched this clip and my jaw dropped,” Griffin admitted. “I worked with Sarah…she was, privately, one of the kindest, sweetest people.” Griffin went on to express her disbelief that Sanders, someone she saw as kind behind the scenes, would make such a divisive comment.
Whoopi Goldberg, the show’s moderator, introduced the clip during the segment, highlighting Sanders’ remarks about her own children keeping her humble, followed by the controversial comment targeting Harris. Many, including The View panelists, interpreted Sanders’ statement as a dig at Harris, who has no biological children.
Griffin, who is married to Justin Griffin and has been open about starting a family, took a strong stand, criticizing Sanders’ comments for shaming women who either choose not to have children or face struggles like infertility. “That we demonize and shame people on the most personal, private decision is so anti-family, it’s anti-women,” she said, calling the comment out as harmful not just to women, but to men as well.
Fellow co-host Sunny Hostin chimed in, emphasizing that there are many ways to be a mother, referencing Harris’ role as a stepmother, affectionately called “Momala” by her stepchildren. Hostin added, “Kamala is a self-made person, she’s a child of immigrants…the trope that a Black woman lacks humility because she’s well-educated and accomplished is a tired trope.”
Goldberg closed the discussion with a pointed message directed at Sanders, saying, “If you care about families, make sure that when you actually get an idea of what you need to be doing for the people of this country, you’ll include children in that, and make sure that children get what they need.”
The debate comes as Sanders’ comments echo previous remarks by J.D. Vance, who in 2021 made a controversial comment about “childless cat ladies” running the Democratic party. Vance’s statement received widespread backlash, including from celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Oprah Winfrey, Meghan McCain, and Taylor Swift, who criticized the remark during her endorsement of Harris following the second presidential debate.
As tensions continue to rise on both sides of the political spectrum, Griffin’s powerful stance on The View sends a clear message: women, regardless of their family choices, deserve respect and should not be belittled or shamed.
