He’s a little busy balling with the Looney Tunes.

While his role in the NBA is probably what he’s best known for, LeBron James is a world-level basketball player who has represented Team USA in the Olympic Games on three separate occasions: first in 2004 where he earned a bronze, second in 2008 where he brought home the gold, and third in 2012 where he scored the gold once again. James missed out on the 2016 Olympics due to his second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and since he’s not getting any younger, fans have started wonder if he’ll be donning the Team USA colors one last time.

When asked after a recent game if he would play for Team USA at the repeatedly-delayed Tokyo 2021 Olympics in July, James shot the suggestion down, saying that his loyalties are currently to the Looney Tunes.

“Nah, I think I’m gonna play for the Tune Squad this summer instead of the Olympics,” he joked.

James is, of course, referring to his role in the upcoming film Space Jam: A New Legacy, which is set to premiere on July 21, not too far from the Olympics. James has had a bit of a rough season with several injuries, so he’s likely taking the opportunity to get some downtime while simultaneously promoting his very first Hollywood film role.

While the vast majority of athletes slated to participate in the games will be vaccinated, a large portion of Japan’s populace don’t want the games running. It might be in James’ best interest from an advertising perspective to steer clear of what may end up being the least popular Olympics in history.
