Kate Bush Thanks ‘Stranger Things’ for ‘Running Up That Hill’ Resurgence
The famously reclusive singer appeared to thank the show for reviving her music.
Since the release of its fourth season at the end of May, Netflix sci-fi thriller Stranger Things has found itself tied to the classic 1985 song “Running Up That Hill,” written and performed by Kate Bush. The song actually became a vital plot point for the show as well as a recurring leitmotif, and even features in the newly-released trailer for the back half of the series set to release on July 1.
Today, Bush herself, who has long been known as a generally reserved and private person, gave a rare interview with BBC Radio 4, reported by Stylist, about her thoughts on the show and the resurgence of her song.
“[Stranger Things] is such a great series, I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this. It’s so exciting. But it’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? I mean, the whole world’s gone mad!”
“What’s really wonderful is that this is a whole new audience. In a lot of cases, they’ve never heard of me. And I love that! The thought of all these really young people hearing the song for the first time and discovering it, I think it’s very special.”

Bush said that she doesn’t usually listen to her back catalog of tracks, so she hadn’t heard “Running Up That Hill” in a while prior to its appearance in Stranger Things.
“I think they’ve put it in a really special place. I mean, the Duffer Brothers created the series and, actually, we watched it from the first season onwards, so I was already familiar with the series. And I thought what a lovely way for the song to be used in such a positive way – you know, as a kind of talisman, almost, for Max. And yeah, I think it’s very touching, actually.”
